Occupy Albany I.T. Working Group Minutes 6/2/2012

OASIS site

  • Without someone from OASIS present, this was shelved for next meeting, or otherwise, future discussion

Occupy Mail

  • Up till 6/2, OCCUPYALBANY.ORG mail was still being handled by helix.wtfayla.net (Fong’s server)
  • Postfix is the mail server software on both helix and OA’s server
  • Helix uses a MySQL (database) backend; OA’s uses traditional text file config Database entries were converted to a text file using the following command:

mysql -u root -p -e ‘select address, goto FROM alias WHERE domain=”occupyalbany.org”;’ postfix > virtual

  • file was copied to OA’s server via the ‘scp’ command in UNIX file was transposed to a Berkley DB file (binary) with the following command:

sudo postmap /etc/postfix/virtual

  • Postfix was restarted using the following command:

sudo service postfix restart

  • Although OA’s server was now ready to receive email for OCCUPYALBANY.ORG, DNS had to be changed to direct all incoming email to it
  • DNS for OCCUPYALBANY.ORG is still hosted on helix; Fong was able to make the MX record change
  • Fong offered up web-based access for anyone interested in being able to do DNS editing; Chad informally proposed installing running BIND on OA’s server in the future
  • Posftixadmin is no more, as concerns OCCUPYALBANY.ORG, since it does not exist on OA’s server; it may or may not require a MySQL backend
  • New email aliases must be created by editing /etc/postfix/virtual via UNIX shell, converting it to a DB binary file and restarting Postfix
  • Two scripts were created for accomplishing this task: ‘postfixedit’ and ‘postfixrestart’

Mailman

  • Fong showed a brief overview of what it would involve to get Mailman on the OA server
  • Since LISTS.OCCUPYALBANY.ORG has its own distinct MX record, listservs are still being handled by helix
  • A Doodle will be sent out for a work session to install Mailman, allowing the opportunity for others to participate in the process

Signup Widget

  • Chad demo’ed his listserv signup widget
  • It supports any email list that offers email-based signup (Mailman, Google, Riseup)
  • It had some hiccups, but Chad designed this WordPress plugin from scratch (Way to go Chad!)
  • It can be configured via shortcode to show all available lists in a drop-down, or just a specific list
  • It was agreed that we would remove it from the front page in favor of the Constant Contact signup; Specific instances of the widget will be added to Working Group pages

Process

  • It was decided that process for adding/removing new Facebook admins will be left wholly up to the OCP working group
  • Adding system administrators shall be done in an informal interpersonal manner; at the very least we will want to meet with new people in person at an IT meeting prior to allowing them administratator access
  • Calendar postings should be referred to Working Groups (ie. folks who already have the Working Group login credentials)
  • Recent Requests
  • Democratize the Economy will be rebuilt from the old site and a accompanying WG login made; Jan will be contacted
  • Clarification needs to be made on the request regarding a Money-Out-of-Politics web-form. Is this help with an outside website? Or a section on OA’s site

Pornography Incident

  • It was determined that, at this time, IT should not conjure up any kind of mechanisms for filtering or other enforcement
  • We will make a best effort to remove inappropriate content from the office computer
  • Fong suggested Eraser (http://eraser.heidi.ie/download.php) for secure deletion
